No love for script kiddies

By now, you've probably noticed something... odd about membership.

Well, probably not since nobody in their right mind comes here anymore.

I mean, it's not like they did earlier... I'm getting off track.

Suffice to say that somewhere along the way, some bright soul noticed that new subscribers to phpBB get their URL crawled by the "New Member" thingy at the bottom, so they've taken to spamming phpBB account creation with them. Since they're script kiddies and not neccessarily bright people, the email addressses they use inevitably bounce and I get the "U R N Idiot" messages.

I've patched things up so that:
1. Unless you successfully register, your URL does not get displayed.
2. If you don't successfully register within a given time period, the account is deleted.
3. If you do successfully register, you've got a slightly longer time period to take some action (an action that I, as an administrator, can remove at any point)

This, of course, will not deter the idiots and script kiddies in the slightest, but it does mean that those of you keeping up on such things will marvel as new folks come and go.

You see, hacking the program is one thing, having direct access to the database is FAR more useful.

I note that the latest "No time for script kiddies" has an actual name rather that the usual mix of alphanumerics. Would this be an accident or is it trawling names from an address book?

You know, i'm not sure.

Since "Daniel" has yet to actually log in, the domain he points to is registered in russia, I'm betting that it's just another spammer.

I'm about to leave Houston (I've been here on a 6 week business trip) and head off to Tyamen, Siberia for 2 or 3 years. I shall undertake to hunt down and emasculate Russian or Siberian Spammers in you august and majestic name.

Or maybe not, depending upon the weather.
