Well, Word died on my computer last night (and took my computer along with it for a while.) So I didn't get quite as much done on the next chapter as I hoped.
I'll try to wrap it up by friday, but figured y'all might actually like to hear an excuse that wasn't just "JR's Lame". _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

Word is the vi of the windows world. (Granted, if I used anything other than the stupid autocorrect feature, I'd feel less lame about it)
Besides, I tried Open Office a few years back. It gave me a rash. (Granted, this was before they moved to UNO, and during the height of the Java wars, but I didn't feel like waiting an hour for things to start up.)
Considering that i've made the move to Mozilla mail, I may try grabbing a copy tonight. _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

I like OpenOffice just fine, except for its habit of spontaneously reformatting documents for me. (Look, if I wanted those six pages to be in bold italic subscript, I would have told you...) _________________ Unitedheroes.net - We're not lazy, we're... um... productivity-challenged. |

I use OO for things like resumes and letters that have to look purdy and character sheets for games, but for general typing, nothing beats Textpad. Small, fast, and has some great features to it. _________________ Shihan of Martial Arts Sandwich Making and author of Christopher Ford, Amateur Paranormalist |

Ok, I've downloaded and installed Open Office. It's nice, but it's got quirks a plenty.
As for the actual writing stuff. I tore up the chapter and rewrote the first three pages.
Unfortunately, they're also the last three pages.
Those foolishly in the pool for "Friday" should go ahead and had their monies over to Lenny the Bookie. _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

Yeah, you gotta get used to it. I bet you found word had quirks aplenty back when you switched from WP... what I like with OOo is that file size is about 1/4 for normal stuff, and WAY less for larger documents.
And of course the way it _doesn't_ crash in the middle of some important document, taking your info with you. If you have to set "autosave every 10 minutes" in any program that means that particular program is _lousy_.
(... I switched from word for Mac to word for dos, way back when. Boyo, did that ever have quirks... then, I got WP, and told it to show menus always, and that was cool. Then, we got Word for Win31 or so, and that was almost like word for mac, so that was OK. So I'd used that for ages, but now I use OOo, almost exclusively.) |

There's a lot of stuff about OO I don't like, especially how GOD-DAMNED POSSESSIVE IT IS ABOUT ITS GOD-DAMNED FILE FORMAT, YES I AM SURE I "DON'T WANT TO SAVE IN OPENOFFICE FORMAT" EVERY TIME I HIT CONTROL-S ON A DOCUMENT YOU GOD-DAMNED PIECE OF SHITE AND YOU REALLY DON'T NEED TO ASK ME EVERY TIME I CLOSE A WINDOW, but generally speaking I feel pretty good about it after six months of use.
While I'm not against OTHER people pirating software, I try not to do it myself, and it's the best alternative to paying for Microsoft. I still use WordPad for half the stuff I do, but OpenOffice can handle page breaks, and that puts it over the top. _________________ the idiot at least partially behind

Yeah, there are some other quirks I'm not really happy about with OO (like why is it so counter intuitive not to use the default system font for menus, yes I found the setting, but it's not what the site says I should do) but I'm starting to appreciate it.
Granted, if the story didn't require me tossing out most of what I'd written, I probably would have posted yesterday, but that's not OO's fault.
(OK, JR once more from the top: Read old chapters on occasion, if you're going to talk about something, do it with the folks that are there, and stop writing sober) _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

Ok. Now try to save a (changed) non-.doc file in word. Gwan, I dare ya.
With OOo you can at least go file a feature request: "where can I turn this off?". Try to find that feature request feature at M$. _________________ Henriette's herbal medicine pages |

Well, what i do with MS Office is create a few Templates, then i stick with them-never even chnge out. That irons out all the quirks (most of the time), except that Word takes it upon itself to screw around with my Templates every other time i use them. (No thank you John MS tech support)
Bah NOTEPAD...Its what i used when i code, and what i use when i type items that do not need spell check. Like this forum message.
Though Wordpad is good too. I've never used OO, but i've heard good things about it... |

I quite like kwrite, it comes with color coding for a lot of languages.
I've just read an article about nifty PHP editors though, and might go Quanta Plus (functions, variables used, etc. on the left? Cool!) or phpEclipse (get syntax errors as you type? Luxury!). _________________ Henriette's herbal medicine pages |
