A month.

I've been waiting now for just over a month for Earthlink to hook up DSL into my new house.

This afternoon I decided to give them a call to see what was causing the latest delay. Apparently, (after giving me some weird crap about there being some "residual DSL signal on the line") I found out the real answer.

I am, supposedly, just out of reach of one of the DSL offices.

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I ain't buying that.

Why? I live in San Jose, CA, the left ventricle of the Silicon Valley. I live in a neighborhood thick with geeks, part of some sort of suburban techy equivalent of a leper colony.

No, I believe other, more sinister hands are at work because now I, ex-SBC customer, slime Earthlink customer may be forced to become a new SBC customer again because they own the link from the office to my house.

Frankly, I don't trust them further than I can comfortably spit the building they're located in.

*sigh* DSL. It's electric crack.

All I can say is that they're NOT getting their grimy little hands on my yahoo.com account.

There was a comparison of local ADSL providers in the major Helsinki paper.

MOST of them deliver 6-8 weeks from order, even if their website says "2 weeks". The ones I signed up with, about a week before that newspaper article, connected me in three days ("It'll take a week, is that ok?" "Sure." "Hello, this is your ADSL technician. You're now connected." "Wow, _that_ was fast!")

And, with ADSL, I can go online from linux, too. Wheee!

I live right down the office from my telephone co-operative, I also live in an Amish community, where people with black hats still drive horses and buggies(hows that for a super hero, "BUGGY MAN" able to erect barns in the course of a day, muck the stalls, and still get completely hammered that night, all without breaking the bishops rule). It took me two hours to get connected, and that's because I got a bad modem first time round.

Sigh, it's just not fair is it.

At least you probably have a movie theater though.

Your mennonites are Dutch? All ours here are German mennonites from Mexico.

Try to figure that one out.

Pennsylvania Dutch = Deutsch.

It's an odd bastardization of the language, but you get used to it growing up there. Just like they're not all Deustch. Some are scottish, some are french.

Incidentally, Amish != Mennonite. That's like saying Baptists and Methodists are the same.

They aren't?

Huh.

Well, my education included christianity as split into evangelic, catholic, and greek-orthodox. And other religions, like islam, hinduism, shinto, etc.

Nobody mentioned methods or baptisms anywhere. Nor did they mention amish or mennites or such.

Which is the lot that runs Utah, again?

Truthfully, I don't think SEELE is representative of mainstream Christianity.

Actually, the best way to divide christian sects is Evangelical (single act of salvation, only the "saved" get in to heaven) and Orthodoxy (salvation through penance, just about anyone can get into heaven, how they act here on Earth determines how much heaven they get).

Baptists are Fundamental Evangelicals, which means once you're saved, through spiritual rebirth (born again), you're always saved. After you're "saved," you have to have an actual physical baptism to get into heaven. "Believe and be baptised."

Methodists are Orthodox, and believe that the rituals of the Old Testament are binding to modern believers, the difference being that Jesus' death fulfilled all blood sacrifice requirements. Everyone's a sinner and needs constant spiritual renewal.

The Mennonites are descended from the Free Church, extreme Orthodox. The Amish are a branch of Mennonites; same basic tenets but a few differences in practice.

Mwahahahaha. I was afraid nobody would get that one. Except Jeff Nimoy, who would then turn LCL into "milkshakes".

Andrew "NO .SIG MAN" "Juan" Perron, Protestant. Specifically, protesting "Rocket Power".

Our mennonites were from Germany, during Hitlers rule, they were not so politely asked to leave, they moved down to Mexico, where they were also not so politely asked to leave. So that's why all our Mexican Mennonites speak german. You're also exactly right about the Mennonite not the same, Amish tend to be Mennonite, but all Mennonites aren't Amish. Think of it as Amish as a way of life, and Mennonite as a religion.

By the way, if anyone wants to know more about Amish, Mennonites, Christianity in general, or any other religion, they should visit http://www.religioustolerance.org/ . *Very* good site; objective and intelligent, IMHO.
