Scanned the comic. NICE. I got almost all of the references, but then again I like Zombie flics, they're very stress releaving.

Alas, I failed. I'll have to commit sepuku to regain some honor.

It's really been a long time since I've read the novel, so I couldn't remember the specifics of any of his explanations. So I just went with the truth.

Apparently there was a movie made as well, I never saw it, but I've heard about it. IMDB shows an interesting cast.

Just stay away from conversations regarding sexual preferences and rape. Jubal's a little old fashioned on those topics and might offend someone.

Thats pretty neat. I always think it would be kinda cool to meet Heinlen.

My dad had always tried his hardest to get me into his favorite Science Fiction authors. So I have a healthy background in Heinlen, Asimov, Clarke, and Herbert.

Actually, he bought dune pretty soon after it was released, just because he was traveling a lot with work and wanted a book to read. He basically picked it at random from an airport bookstore. The owner of the book store told him that the Frank Herbert was coming in for a book signing later that night. My dad, who hadn't heard of him or started the book yet, decided he didn't care about and author he knew nothing about, and decided to just go up to his hotel room for the night instead. He was pretty disappointed that he never went after he read the book. So my dad has a first edition copy of Dune that was almost signed. Does that count for something?

Whoa.

Frank Herbert had a book tour that featured airport book stores?

Man, while I can see how that saves a great deal of time, it kinda makes for a pretty sucky book tour. Sad to say, even if I was vaguely aware of Frank Herbert at the time, I'd probably have made the same choice.

Herberts book tour wasn't just airports. It's a standard that, when on a book tour, you stop by the stores in airports, train stations, bus depots, ferry drops, whatever and do the glad handing / book signing. It costs nothing, you have to travel through the place anyway and you can gain a lot of readers and credibility as being "just another guy".

I met Heinlein in 1975. I was just starting work as an engineering gopher, so I was doing a courier of design stuff to the office in Greenville. I took 3 days leave and... pilgrimage. I was recieved with affable courtesy along with another couple of acolytes and we listened in somewhat humble awe. He could cut through bullshit like a knife. I only spoke (or rather listened) with him for 15 minutes. Man, he was and is still my icon. Signed my tattered SiaSL, which had been in my back pocket for 4,000 miles, and smiled. He said "Books need to see the world too." It was another 4,000 miles and 3 days before I came down from the buzz.
