Ok, so a few months ago I signed up for the employee discount at work. Nifty doodles, right? My cellphone bill goes down about 25%.
One problem though, my automated pay service didn't update the account number so I'd get one bill saying I've got a $40 credit and another saying I owed $40.
Eventually things kinda sorta got worked out, sorta and I'm either totally paid up or I've got an $80 credit that I've paid twice, depending on who at sprint I talk to.
Right up to the point where said 4 year old cellphone's battery died.
I should also note that this phone is my pager and remote email device for when I'm not sitting at a computer or at work.
It's ok though, Sprint is getting back at me for confusing the hell out of their billing department. This weekend their "upgrading their servers".
Ok, gang, I work at a company with a good many servers, and here's a tip. If the service ever goes away for longer than five minutes because of an "upgrade", something (or more likely someone) is on fire and possibly stomping it's way toward the heart of Tokyo leaving a path of destruction behind it.
It's a darn pretty paperweight, none the less. _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

It's easy to buy a new battery for an old cellphone. That's what I did, a year or three ago. A year or two after that the phone itself went funky (couldn't hear what others were saying over the phone, things like that) so I got a new one; switched wotsit, thingy, into new machine, updated provider on necessary details (done by mobile phone shop drone), no problem at all.

Have I mentioned that the US is the third world country of mobile communications?
The only battery I was able to find for my phone was one in a dusty shop in Kansas who said it might fit my phone.
Unfortunately, the model here is "Just buy a new Upgrade! It's fun and easy!"
The fact that it helps their bottom line probably doesn't hurt either.
Oh, and incase you're curious. Buy a cellphone here and it doesn't work anywhere else in the world.
God, I love technology. _________________ The Grayhound Chronicles

I agree with TA, there is a signifigant problem here with Cell Phones, up until about 5 years ago, only serious business people, and really, really rich people carried them. Now they're spreading out quite a bit, but there are real problems with coverage, you can't get digital in most of the country, so even with a good battery, you're only good for a few hours, that is when you're actually in range of a tower, and when your phone dies, there's always a "fantastic" reason to just get a new one. Especially since they usually give you a free cell phone when you join the service. Replacement parts often end up being more expensive than the phone was. It's kind of crazy. CRAZY.

There was a bit in the paper today that 60 % of the European adult population carry mobile phones; in Finland it's probably closer to 80 % (if not higher - even considering that some of my friends carry 2 or even 3 of the things ... one for work, one private; _or_, and some guys actually do this, one for the wife, one for the girlfriend.).
Also, perhaps 30 % of age 8-15 have mobile phones, and this number is on the rise, especially these days where it's easy to get prepaid phone charge cards everywhere. Moms like them because they can call their kids, kids like them because they can call mom or their friends, and parents like prepaid things for their kids so the kids don't spend the family fortune on online games or phone sounds or calls to timbooktoo or something.
Phone companies aren't allowed to dump cellphone prices, so we pay pretty much full rates for the phones, which means that we get upset if they're not repairable.
Therefore, we have a nice network of mobile phone service thingies... used to be we had banks on every corner, these days it's mobile phone shops.

And here I though post-it notes were a kind of cool invention.
And digital watches(ref. Hitchhikers Guide)
