Ok, so Retro Crush started doing the 100 scariest movie moments of all time, and it got me thinking...

So the question I pose to you is, what is the scariest movie you've ever seen? And why is it so scary?

Probably the movie they showed us in parenting class about the birthing process...........

I've never been much of a horror movie person, but I suppose the most recent "scary" movie was probably Resident Evil. It was only scary the first time through though. After that it was just kind of ho-hum. What made it scary was the suspense, good music, and lots of things going gaaaa! as they jumped out.

Remember, if you're in a horror movie, never say "I'll be right back"

The scariest movie I ever saw was "It," but that was only because I saw it at a friend's overnight party when I was 9 years old. Surprised

I kind of stayed away from horror flicks after that. I can scare myself just fine.
Very Happy

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...

It's scary because it's so believable. And I'm not watching any horror movies, ever again - it's not fun, and it gives me nightmares.

Conceptually the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series is probably the scariest. Really, what's scarier than something that can kill you in your dreams. Unfortunately, the movies were not very scary and quite stupid.

I'm not one to be scared by much but I tend to find certain things creepy.
-the tall man in Poltergiest
-the Gentlemen in the Buffy episode Hush
-the clown in It (until the stupid spider bit, that made the clown far less creepy)
-the little girl in Dune
-nuns (priests and religion, too, but nuns are the creapiest)
-when I was really young zombies scared me, but as I grew up they became sillier and sillier (what's so hard about defeating things that only shamble at top speed)

Probably, the scariest thing to me is being aware of losing your mind by some force that is impossible to prevent.

I do find horror that just makes you jump to be particularly bad and not very enjoyable. It's not scary, it's just stupid.

My actual nightmares are scary enough on their own, and fairly movie-like. I had a dream once where me and a bunch of other people took a plane out to an island to visit some kind of scientifice aquarium stuff going on, but when we got there, we all got locked into an underwater base-type-thing. It was like a big metal room with lots of doors; and then something started pounding on the doors. I forget exactly how the rest of it went, but there was something with a big airtight concrete bunker being lowered into water, doors that could only be opened with official keys, and an invisible monster thing that could only travel through water and took over people's bodies. It scared the hell out of me, and was possibly one of the most complex dreams I've ever had. And the scene with the airplane taking off at the end, with the pilot being discovered to be the monster, then the crash and the junk atolls and the building of the big rubber boat....

Surprised

It was a long dream.

Question

Have you ever wondered exactly what kind of crazy you are? I have. I think I'll look into a good psychology course....

Honestly? I know it's a little gauche to say this now due to backlash and all, but the Blair Witch Project scared the leaping bejeezus out of me. And yes, I'm a guy that's spent his fair share of time in the woods.

Blair Witch 2 scared me too, but for entirely different reasons...

I'm glad to hear someone else say that. The first time I saw it was in the theatre, still blissfully unaware of the hype and not too sure what the film was about, and it scared the tar out of me.

Even later, when it came out on tape, I saw it in my own home with someone else in the room, and it still scared me.

I enjoyed that, but I won't say it scared me.

Well, the first movie that I saw that I enjoyed being scared at was the original Alien.

Second time around i came properly prepared.

with a rubber snake and a balcony seat.

As for generally scarey movies, Psycho. I tend to favor horror movies that don't go for the gore. Gore's cheap, anyone will scream if you show them a severed head, that's instinctive. (The fake severed leg I've got sitting in my cube is good proof of that.) Good horror builds trust between the audience, then turns on it in disturbing ways. Pennywise was a good example of it. Clowns are creepy to most kids because of their artificial nature. Pennywise simply reaffirms that concept in completely new ways.

well, except for the spider bit. I agree that was a cop out.

Actually, if I may, Steve's Kurtz got me pleanty creeped.

You should copyright that concept and sell it, it actually sounds kind of cool. It sounds like a lot of sci-fi movies linked together(alien, deep blue, and Resident evil) Could be a hit.

Though I know it hasn't been made into a movie yet, another Stephen King book was the one that disturbed me the most. That was Dream Catcher. The whole shiznit weasel thing just turned my stomach.
